Foot of the Month Project - Elven Table Manners

Posted by Bree Frost

Have you ever wanted to try a free motion quilting but have been daunted by the idea? There are so many ways to stitch through a three-layer sandwich to create a quilt that trying them all to find out which you might be good at can seem intimidating.

Then finding out that people do it with no feed dogs, no meticulous drawing or stencilling, gasp! Sometimes they quilt even without piecing or blocks to follow, which seems ludicrous. Here is an easy way to jump into a wholecloth, free motion project that doesn’t have to feel like an overwhelming test of your skillset.

Focusing on the PFAFF Free Motion Ruler Foot and Inspira Ruler Foot Template set, this small project with simple components can look polished and impressive to family and friends with an inviting set of dining mats including place mats, table runner, drawer/tray liner and Lazy Susan mat.

The Free Motion Ruler Foot is specifically design to be ¼” from the needle position to the outside of the foot. The red markings indicate where the centre of the foot is and little ‘cut outs’ in the foot allow for better visibility when sewing.

The INSPIRA® Ruler Foot Template Set contains 4 templates. Three are beautiful templates designed to enhance your quilts for quilting feature designs, for blocks, border and backgrounds.

  • Heart - 3 1/2"
  • Continuous Figure 8 - 2 1/2"
  • Spin-e-fex 10 2 1/2"

Combine these with the Crosshair Ruler 8 Point – 8 ½” x 8 ½” to make perfect reference lines.

In this Foot of the Month project, Bree explains how to achieve the look of elvish table wear in a simple and encouraging manner, while still making some interior design choices she’s always wanted to try.  The three templates included in the set don’t necessarily need to be used as originally intended and she tries to use the heart, leaf and figure 8 templates in a more imaginative and fantastical method.
