DIY wire head band

Posted by Carina Thavelin

By adding gauge wire to your sewn head band you will get a different style with a slight fifties vibe. It can be done in any type of fabric and style, give it a try!

This is what you need:

  • A strip of fabric, about 80x12cm (31"x5")
  • Gauge wire 90cm (35")
  • Pliers
  • Sewing thread matching fabric

Fold the fabric in half lengthwise and sew a straight stitch seam, leaving a 5cm opening to turn it right side out. Start and end with a curve, see illustration.

Trim the excess fabric, leaving a 5mm (1/4") seam allowance.Turn inside out and press the edges. Create a loop in both edges of the gauge wire, the finished length should be as long as the fabric piece.

Insert the wire in the fabric and close the opening with a straight stitch.

Done! Hope you like it!

Won't the wire slip around the fabric after it is used? Unless you use a really wide wire- to hold it in place????
Really great creative idea! I was searching for somethings made from the heart.

Hi Kathy,
I used a wire approx. 2mm thick.

Could you please tell me what thickness gauge wire you used. There are so many sizes at Home Depot and I don't want to get the wrong one. Thank you so much for such a wonderful idea!
