Double welt pockets

A double-welt pocket opening produces a very professional finish. Contrast or matching welt strips may be used. For each pocket, you will need two welt strips, each twice as wide and approx. 1 1/4" (3 cm) longer than the finished pocket opening area. Transfer all pocket markings to the welt strips and garment. Interface the back of the pocket opening area. Fold welt strips in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Place welt strips on the right side of the garment so that the long open edges of the strips meet at the centre of the marked pocket area.

Using a normal stitch length, sew along the centre of each strip, beginning and ending at the marked pocket lines. Make sure you secure the beginning and end of the seam. Cut along the centre of the pocket area, ending approx. 1/4" (7 mm) from ends. Clip into corners, making sure not to cut into the welt strips.

Pull the welt strips through the opening to the inside of the garment. The folded edge of the strips should meet in the centre of the pocket opening. Fold the small triangles at the ends of the pocket toward the inside and stitch across to secure them to the welt strips. Trim the ends of the welt strips to approx. 1/4" (7 mm). From the right side, stitch-in-the ditch around the marked pocket opening. Attach pocket lining pieces as described for the single welt pocket.
