Portia Lawrie is a predominantly self-taught dressmaker and designer with a particular focus on reusing unwanted textiles. She has been writing about sewing since 2010, on her social media and her website: www.portialawrie.co.uk

Portia is the founder/creator of The Refashioners, an annual sewing event that launched in 2011 and ran until 2019. Its aim was to challenge the global sewing community to look at old clothes in a new light, and provide inspiration and tutorials (and often a huge competition prize) to encourage participation and get this message across.

Portia has been a contributor to Simply Sewing magazine since its launch in 2015, designing and writing reader tutorials for a mix of refashioning, pattern hacks and patternless projects. She was awarded Dressmaker magazine’s Dressmaker of the Year in 2017. Winning with a quilted denim coat made from unwanted jeans.

She lives in rural Essex, UK, with her partner and teenage son, working from a cabin at the bottom of the garden.

Portia's first book The Re:Fashion Wardrobe will publish in March 2023 with Searchpress.

  • Matt Gage

    Specialties

    • Sewing
    • Garments
Matt has been sewing since about 2015 when he started to up-cycle clothes to sell online. He then got involved in making drag costumes for friends in the east London drag community. This got him hooked on sewing and continued to teach himself from a mixture of online tutorials and pestering friends for advice.

In 2019, he thought he would send off his application for The Great British Sewing Bee. As he had only been sewing for a few years he didn’t think anything would come of it, but to his surprise he got through, and to even more surprise made it through to the final!

Since leave the Bee, Matt has worked on costumers for the West End theatre, developed his own line of easy to make sewing patterns (available at https://www.keepbritainsewing.com) and now working on his very own fashion brand!
