Glam Bag - Sewing Project

Create this little glitter holiday clutch using beautiful decorative stitches with your PFAFF® sewing machine.

Glam Bag Project

Supplies:

  • PFAFF® sewing machine
  • PFAFF® ¼” Quilting Foot with IDT™ #820926096
  • INSPIRA™ Fusible “No Show” Mesh stabilizer
  • Sew-Soft Fusible Quilt Batting
  • PFAFF® Universal needle, size 80
  • Robison-Anton thread – 2 colors (grey and silver)
  • Two spools of sewing thread to match purse color
  • Bobbin thread
  • ½ yard silk dupioni for purse
  • ½ yard cotton fabric for lining
  • ½ yard heavy weight fusible interfacing
  • Scrap piece of leather for tassle approx. 3”x4”(8x10cm)
  • Metal looking ribbon 1.3 yards (1.15m)
  • Two rings for chain
  • 1 magnetic closure
  • Chalk marker
  • Scissors
  • Pins

Sewing Design 

Prepare:

  • Fuse the INSPIRA™ Fusible “No Show” Mesh stabilizer to the wrong side of the silk.
  • Fuse the heavyweight fusible stabilizer to the wrong side of the lining fabric.

 

Cut:
From the silk:

  • One piece 20” wide x 14” long
  • One purse front using pattern
  • One purse back using pattern

From the lining fabric:

  • One purse front using pattern
  • One purse back using pattern
  • One purse flap using pattern

From the Sew-Soft Fusible Quilt Batting:

  • One piece 7” long x 12” wide

Decorate:

  • Sew decorative stitches on the length of the fabric. Add ribbons for a 3D effect.

  • Lay the two flap front pattern pieces on the embroidered fabric, aligning the embroidery rows with the lines on the pattern. Be sure to lay the pattern pieces in the recommended direction of the stitches. Transfer marks from the pattern to the fabric.

  • Cut the pieces out.

Sew:

  • Snap on the PFAFF® ¼” Quilting Foot with IDT™. Engage the IDT™ system.

  • Select straight stitch 1.1.1.

  • Thread your PFAFF® sewing machine with sewing thread on top and in the bobbin.

  • Aligning the marks, sew the two embellished flap pieces together using a ¼” seam.

  • Press the seam open.

  • Cut Sew-Soft Fusible batting to match purse flap. Fuse to the wrong side of the embroidered flap, following manufacturer’s instructions.

  • Cut Sew-Soft Fusible batting to match purse flap. Fuse to the wrong side of the embroidered flap, following manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Snap on the PFAFF® ¼” Quilting Foot with IDT™. Engage the IDT™ system.

  • With right sides together, sew the decorated flap to the flap lining along three edges. Leave the edge that will attach to the purse open. Turn and press.

  • Install half of the magnetic closure on the lining of the flap – in the center of the flap, approximately ¾” from the finished edge. It should not go through the decorated piece. Set the flap aside.

  • With right sides together, sew the purse front and back together along the bottom and sides, using a ¼” seam.

  • With right sides together, sew the purse front and back lining together the same way, leaving a 4” opening in the bottom seam for turning.

  • Pin the flap to the purse back right sides together, matching the dots marked.

  • Place the purse into the purse lining, right sides together, pin then sew around the top, using a ¼” seam.Tip: Use the free arm on your PFAFF® sewing machine to make it easy to sew the top seam.

  • Turn purse right side out through the opening in the lining. Press.

  • Mark the placement of the magnetic closure on the purse front.

  • Reach into the purse through the opening in the lining. Install the second half of the magnetic closure on the silk bag front only. It should not go through the purse lining.

  • Topstitch the opening in the purse lining closed. Press.

  • Attach one ring in each side where side seam and flap meet. Pull the ribbon through the rings and tie a knot. Cut the leather into ¼” wide strips leaving 1” att he top. Roll the leather around the knot of the ribbon and glue.
