PFAFF ambition™ Sewing Machine Pattern - Gentle Waves Bed Runner

Create a stunning Bed Runner applique quilting project. Ombré fabric was used to create the appliquéd squares on this simple bed runner. Soft, ocean waves inspired the colors and echo quilting. The finished size is approximately  102” x 27”(259cm x 69cm).

To sew a Gentle Waves Bed Runner you will need:

• PFAFF ambition™ Sewing Machine
• One roll INSPIRATM Paper-Backed Fusible Web
• #620133496
• 11⁄2 yards(1.4m) ombré fabric, for square appliqués NOTE: Yardage requirements listed are based on an ombré fabric that has a lighter center, progressing to a darker color closest to the selvage. More yardage may be needed if selected ombré fabric differs from this.
• 31⁄2 yards(3.2m) fabric for background and binding

Cutting:

From ombré fabric:

• Two pieces: 13”(33cm) square from lightest portion of fabric
• Six pieces: 12”(30.5cm) square from darkest portion of fabric One piece: 10”(25.4cm) square from dark portion of fabric
• Two pieces: 10” (25.4cm) square from the light portion of fabric Two pieces: 10” (25.4cm) square from the medium portion of fabric

From backing fabric:

• One piece: 108” L x 32” W(2.7m x 0.8m)

From background fabric:

• One piece: l06” L x 30” W(2.6m x 0.8m)
• 21⁄2”(6.4cm) wide bias strips, enough to equal 270”(6.9m)

From INSPIRA™ Paperbacked Fusible Web:

• Forty Four Pieces: ½”(45.7cm) L x full width of fusible web

Constructing the Triangle Square Appliqués:

Note: ¼”(.6cm) seam allowances are used unless specified

Making Square A:

1. Take one 12”(30.5cm) square of the darkest ombré fabric. Cut the square in half from corner to corner. Cut in half again from corner to corner. You now have four triangles

2. R epeat Step One for the remaining five 12”(30.5cm) dark squares. Keep the four triangles of each square cut in place.

3. Remove the lightest triangle of the four and replace it with a dark triangle from another square. Keep the arrangement in place

4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 until you have four squares made up of four dark triangles.

5. Sew two sets of triangles together from one square. Press seam open. Repeat for the remaining two triangles.

6. Place the pair from Step 5 right sides together, matching the seams in the center, and sew. Press the seams open

7. Repeat until you have four completed squares.

 

Making Remaining Squares B, C, and D:

1. Cut the remaining 10”(25.4cm) squares in to four triangles as in step one of E square directions.

2. You will have more triangles cut than will be used to make squares B, C, and D. This gives some flexibility to make a pleasing arrangement of light/medium, medium/dark, and light dark squares. When combining triangles you may have different size triangles in an arrangement. That is fine, as long as you match the seams in the center. Excess fabric will be trimmed off later.

3. B squares are made up of two light triangles and two dark triangles. Sew two sets of triangles together from one square. Press seams open. Repeat for the remaining two triangles. Make two complete squares

4. C squares are made up of three medium triangles and one light triangle. Sew two sets of triangles together from one square. Press seams open. Repeat for the remaining two triangles. Make two complete squares

5. D squares are made up of three medium triangles and one dark triangle. Sew two sets of triangles together from one square. Press seams open. Make two complete squares

Preparing the Appliqués:

1. Mark A squares to measure 11”(27.9cm) square.

2. Mark B squares to measure 8½”(21.6cm) square.

3. Mark C squares to measure 6”(15.2cm) square.

4. Mark D squares to measure 7”(17.8cm) square.

5. Mark E squares to measure 10”(25.4cm) square.

6. Fold and press seam allowance to the back on the marked line of each square. Trim the seam allowance to about

3⁄8”(9.5mm), as necessary.

7. Apply strips of INSPIRATM Paper-Backed Fusible Web to back side of each square following manufacturer’s directions. Apply the strips to the top edge and the bottom edge, then do each side. This helps eliminate bulk at the corners

Positioning Squares to Appliqué on Background:

1. Draw an outline on piece of background fabric to measure 102”x 27”(2.6m x 0.7m)

2. Position squares on the background fabric using the following diagram to position in place

TIP: Position squares A and E first, then the

remaining squares.

3. Remove paper backing from INSPIRATM Paper-Backed Fusible Web on each square.

4. When squares overlap, fuse only the under square in place, until step 3 of the Securing Appliqué section of the directions. Fuse remaining squares in place according to manufacturer’s directions.

 

Securing Appliqués:

1. Thread machine with variegated sewing thread in needle and all-purpose thread in the bobbin.

2. Set machine for stitch 37. Length= 4.0 Width = 2.5.

3. S titch around each square, pivoting at each corner. Do not back stitch. Pull threads to the back and knot the threads to secure instead

N OTE: When squares overlap, pin-stitch line under square first. Then fuse and pin stitch top square in place.

TIP: Engage Needle Up/Down for ease pivoting.
