Here is a fun Zero Waste Sewing Pattern. Make someone really happy by sewing a hopscotch in the colors of a rainbow! Smart construction makes it possible to bring wherever you go!
Upcycle your old scraps of cotton fabric, old shirts or bandanas into an on-trend Rainbow Hopscotch and know you’ve made a difference by reusing old clothes. In the illustration below you can see the approximate amount of fabric needed for each part. Threads and stabilizers needed are not specified.
Approximate finished size: 27”x91” (70x230cm)
To sew a Rainbow Hopskotch you will need:
A. Cotton fabric for backing
B. Non-slip fabric
C. Batting
D-E. Black cotton fabric to “frame” the hopscotch
F. Black cotton fabric for the part wrapped around the hopscotch when not used
G. Batting
H. Heavy cords
I-K. Cotton fabric in bright colors
L.-O. White cotton fabric for quilt and appliqués
How to sew a Rainbow Hopskotch:
1. Center non-slip fabric on top of backing fabric, placing wrong side of non-slip fabric to right side of backing fabric. Topstitch in place.
Tip: When sewing non-slip fabrics, it is a helpful to use a non-stick presser foot. Due to the special coating on the bottom of this foot, it‘s perfect for sewing hard-to-feed fabrics, like leather, foam, plastic, imitation leather and plastic-coated fabrics. 2. Sew pieces K, J and M together as illustrated below.
Embroider
3. Embroider the numbers for the blocks (pieces I). We have made appliqués using the “Shape Creator™-Feature” on the PFAFF® creative sensation™ pro. The size of the numbers are set to 18cm. The pieces in the cutting scheme used for appliqué are marked N).

4. Once the numbered blocks are decorated, go ahead and decorate the part used to wrap the quilt. We appliquéd the word JUMP! using the Shape Creator™ feature on the creative sensation™ pro. The size of the letters are set to 10cm. The piece in the cutting scheme used for the appliqué is marked N).

Assemble the Hopscotch
5. Place the embroidered panel (F), right side up. Layer batting and the second black fabric piece (F) on top. Sew around three sides as illustrated below (illustration 5). Turn right side out and topstitch around the edges.
6. Arrange the pieces for the front (pieces I-M) as illustrated below. Sew together row by row using a ½” (1cm) seam allowance. Press the seams as you go.
7. Sew the long black strips (D) to the long sides of the hopscotch. Then sew the short black strips (E) to the short sides of the hopscotch.
8. Once the front piece is assembled, quilt the hopscotch. Place batting (C) underneath and stitch around all blocks.
Finalize the Hopscotch
9. Place the front piece of the hopscotch right side up. Position the embroidered panel on top, right side down. Place one cord (H) on each side. Place the back piece on top, right sides down.
Sew together using a ½” (1cm) seam allowance. Leave an opening on the bottom short side for turning.
Turn the hopscotch right side out, sew the opening closed and press.
